Services for children in care

Residential homes

The council has three children’s homes, where we look after children on either a short-term or long-term basis. Staff in the homes provide care and support and help young people plan for their futures with social workers and workers form our leaving care service. The homes aim to help young people do as well as they can in their education, enjoy good health, keep in touch with family and friends and prepare for independence.

Leaving care service

The leaving care service aims to assist young people in the council’s care prepare for their independence and to provide support to young people leaving our care as they establish themselves living independently. The service woks closely with young people, their carers and social workers and aims to help young people to pursue education or training, obtain employment and suitable housing.

Access to resources team

This team is responsible for finding suitable foster or residential homes for children and young people looked after by Tower Hamlets. Its key aims are to ensure that placements meet the individual needs of children and young people, that foster carers and residential units provide high standards of care.

Child protection and supervised children co-ordinations

We employ a number of co-ordinations who ensure that proper plans are in place for children looked after by us and children who may be at risk of harm in the community. These workers chair planning meetings, conferences and review meetings, making sure that all relevant people are involved, that decisions are made and agreed actions are followed though. These workers aim to ensure, wherever possible, the full participation of families and young people I decision making.

Quality, audit and project management

We are committed to providing high quality service for children and families in the borough. Our work is increasingly monitored and judged by the government, elected councillors and people who use our services. Staff in this service help promote and ensure high standards and help managers plan ongoing service improvements.

Community development team

The main task of this team is to contribute towards the development of racially and culturally appropriate services and to provide training, advice and consultation to social workers in their work with children and families in the borough particularly from the Bangladeshi and Somali communities.
