LinkAge Plus
Bringing services for older adults together
LinkAge Plus is a national pilot funded by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) with the support of the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and the Social Inclusion Unit.
LinkAge Plus is the first ever cross government initiative specifically focused on issues facing society as people live longer and they desire to live longer with good health and happiness. The scheme aims to tackle social exclusion among people aged 50 plus, particularly those who are from harder to reach communities.
The two-year scheme began in the summer of 2006. It comprises of eight pilot projects across the country. Tower Hamlets is the only scheme in London. Additional funding for the pilot has been secured through the Neighbourhood renewal scheme.
Linkage Plus centres offer opportunities for Tower Hamlets residents to benefit from a range of social and health related activities to maximise their health and wellbeing, and make the most of later life. Outreach work from these centres helps identify residents who may be socially isolated and not accessing any events or activities. It also identifies those who may have a need for ongoing referral to health, social care, housing advice or benefit maximisation agencies, either statutory or voluntary sector, with the aim to empower individuals to take more control of their lives.
There are five Linkage Plus centres in the borough, which work together in addressing the needs of their local communities. They provide a range of activities, from health promotion, IT classes, welfare advice sessions, to social events. The centres also promote work and volunteering opportunities within LinkAge Plus for those who wish to either return to or remain in the labour market.
