Sheltered housing

Tower Hamlets has 24 sheltered housing schemes spread across the borough. The schemes are of different sizes and offer a range of facilities. Each has a Sheltered Housing Officer who provides support to tenants during working hours.

Sheltered housing schemes are not residential care or care homes, but are specially designed for the over 60s who need a certain level of support but want a home of their own.

The schemes offer independent living with the knowledge that help is close at hand. Then there's the social aspect of living in a block with people of a similar age, and access to communal facilities and events.

Newly built extra care sheltered housing schemes have recently opened.

These schemes provide accommodation and support for frail older people in a high standard, purpose built facility.

A specially trained team of care staff are on site 24 hours a day to provide a personal care and domestic help service to tenants. Referral to these new schemes is via social services care management, the initial contact being the Access Team:
