Beacon council - Promoting racial equality and getting closer to communities

What you told us

Local organisations worked together to develop a compact for Tower Hamlets. The consultation process started in November 2003. Consultation activities were designed to:

  • Raise awareness of the developing compact
  • Identify what could be done to improve the relationship between the sectors.

The process included:

  • Contacting over 500 local third sector organisations
  • Meeting with local third sector umbrella groups
  • Presentations at existing network groups
  • Two Working Together events held on 20 January 2004 at Toynbee Hall and 29 January 2004 at Oxford House
  • Articles about the compact in local newspapers – East End Life and the East London Advertiser
  • Features in the local third sector press
  • Dedicated pages on both the council’s and Community Organisation Forum’s websites
  • Existing feedback from the third sector.

Key outcomes

Tower Hamlets first compact has been adopted by Tower Hamlets Partnership. The compact reflects the comments and feedback from local organisations:

  • A work programme will set out how the specific codes of practice will be developed in parallel rather than prioritising a particular code
  • 83% of participants felt the consultation had raised awareness of the developing third sector compact
  • 62% of participants felt the consultation had helped to identify what could be done to improve relationships between the sectors
  • 80% of participants described the Working Together events as informative and a good networking opportunity.
