What is the third sector?
The voluntary and community sector, organisations which are:
- set up to be charitable or non profit making
- have elected accountability
- usually but not exclusively, local membership
Many third sector organisations will have a clearly stated issue, or locality based, sense of purpose. Faith communities are included and many have a long history of involvement in community work.
Some social enterprises may also be considered part of the third sector.
