Primary school roll projections

Pupil Projections

  • New build initiatives are anticipated to lead to significant increases in school age population in Tower Hamlets

School roll projections provide a useful source of data for understanding trends in the school population. School roll projections take into account cohort survival rates of close to 100% and pupil turnover factors that influence the need for school places. Up to 5% of pupils in Tower Hamlets schools take extended trips abroad, usually to Bangladesh. Extended leave has impact not only on pupils’ learning but also by causing fluctuations in individual school rolls. Future education provision will also be effected as Tower Hamlets continues and will continue to experience a significant scale of building development and increasing numbers of households as detailed in section 2.

Primary School Roll Projections

Tower Hamlets primary education is delivered by nursery and primary schools. There are 6 nursery schools providing education primarily for children below compulsory school age (under 5s). There are 69 primary schools. Many primary schools provide ‘nursery’ classes for under 4s. In the academic year 2003/2004 primary education was delivered to 19,464 pupils (figures 19-20).

The projected need for primary school places is continuing to increase. This increase however will not fully take up the existing margin of unfilled places. The Local Education Authority (LEA) will not be recommending reductions in unfilled places. This is due to anticipation of significant increases in school age population arising out of new build initiatives in the borough.
There continues to be pressure for reception class places in some areas of the borough. The need for measures to address this is kept under review.
