Olympic Games
Tower Hamlets is proud to be a host borough for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The world’s greatest sporting occasion will be happening on our doorstep, and a number of events will take place right here in Tower Hamlets: the men’s and women’s marathons and the Paralympic marathon will pass along Whitechapel Road, Mile End Road and Bow Road, while Victoria Park will be the main venue for the walk race, as well as hosting Olympic cultural events.
Everyone in Tower Hamlets should have the chance to experience this once in a lifetime occasion, whether they’re watching an event, volunteering in the Olympic Park, enjoying the cultural festivities or simply taking in the atmosphere.
But the Games are also bringing opportunities to Tower Hamlets that start long before 2012 – and will continue long afterwards. There will be thousands of new jobs and homes, as well as a new park and sports facilities, and the council is working hard to make sure that these are right for local people.
To find out more about what the Olympics have in store for the borough read our strategy document. There are two versions of the document available to download, one with full graphics and and a graphics light version for easier download:
- Olympics strategy full graphics version (PDF 1Mb) - including maps, visual imagery and aerial photographs
- Strategy for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (PDF 670k) - no graphics
We are also developing a number of programmes that capture the momentum and enthusiasm generated by the Games to help improve people’s lives across the borough. We want the four billion viewers who will be watching the world’s greatest Games ever to be inspired by the rich and diverse borough we live in, so that Tower Hamlets can claim its place in the capital!
