Vision

The vision set out by the Mile End Park in its original bid to the Millennium Commission in April1995 stated:

"Our vision for the Mile End Park of the 21st Century is to transform this segmented and under used open space into an active and vibrant regional park - the best in East London.

We seek to create a park which will offer facilities for the widest possible range of open-air pursuits, from sport and play, to appreciating the arts and enjoying the environment; which will demonstrate excellence and innovation in all aspects of its creation: design, engineering, landscaping, nature conservation; and which will be enjoyed and cherished by the people of Tower Hamlets and the whole of East London.

We aim to exploit the natural setting of the Mile End Park - a linear space of around 75 acres alongside the Regents Canal, stretching from the renowned Victoria Park in the North, to the Limehouse Cut and Limehouse Basin, and then down through the docks to Island Gardens in the South - to create a truly 'green chain' through the heart of the East End; linking land and water and providing a tranquil haven from the noise, dirt and bustle of the inner-city.

Our plan is to create a park of which the local community can be truly proud. We intend to use the process of design and implementation to forge a genuine community partnership, involving and representing the widest possible range of interests, from local youth groups to major East London businesses. This partnership will grow and gather momentum through the course of the park's development, shaping the vision, evolving with the project and lasting beyond its completion in the Year 2000 into the next Millennium, to protect and cherish our achievement."

The park has achieved much of what was set out in the original bid but it is still “work in progress” as a (literally!) growing asset for its users.

Much has been achieved however which form a firm foundation The Park has won several awards and continues to add to its facilities and aspire to high quality standards of management and maintenance.
