Homeless rehousing team

When a Homeless Application has been assessed and it has been decided that this Local Authority has accepted a duty to provide a permanent home, this is what we do in the Rehousing Team:

The Rehousing Team are the section that oversees the provision of permanent accommodation to Homeless Applicants. This means ensuring properties are suitable and meet the needs of Applicants. The Rehousing Team arrange and attend viewings, ensuring Applicants have a smooth transition into their permanent home.

The Rehousing Team also oversee the Choice Based Lettings procedure and are usually the point of call for Applicants actively bidding for properties. This includes input of bids and providing advice over the telephone and in writing on how to bid and what kind of properties Applicants should be bidding for.

Bidding

An opportunity for applicants to choose where they live and what kind of accommodation they wish to live in.

Properties are advertised in East End Life brochure (for applicants placed outside the borough), and on the internet. Bids can be made by using the coupon provided in East End Life or the brochure can be sent by post, delivering in person to Homeless Services or by fax (please note the coupon method will eventually be phased out). They can also bid by telephone and on the internet.

Autobid

This is voluntary and if interested, applicants will have to complete a form declaring their interest as well as an Area Preference form.

When choosing properties, please ensure you are bidding for properties that meet your needs in accordance with the Allocations Policy. You must ensure that properties meet size requirements and medical needs. However, if there are no significant health needs, you are urged to bid for properties on high floor levels and areas you would not usually consider, this would mean getting rehoused quicker.

Although applicants will bed for properties they want rather than what they need, they must be aware that in most cases, the more desirable properties will attract a lot of interest and therefore offered to someone else.

Applicants are required to bid as often as possible and be flexible and realistic in the kind of properties being bid for.
