Rent deposit team

The Rent Deposit Team administer the Rent Deposit Scheme (RDS), which was set up to assist homeless applicants who wanted to rent a flat privately, rather than opt for a council or housing association property.

With no waiting lists, privately rented accommodation is a much quicker way of getting into suitable accommodation, but many applicants cannot afford a months rent as deposit and a months rent in advance. The Rent Deposit Scheme allows us to pay this expense for eligible applicants, enabling them to suitably meet their housing needs.

The Rent Deposit Scheme is not limited to accommodation within Tower Hamlets, so applicants have a wider choice of properties and we will provide advice and support to the applicants while they are settling into their new home. We can, however, fast-track housing benefit applications for properties within Tower Hamlets, if applicants choose to stay within the borough.

All properties will be regularly inspected and have annual gas and electrical safety checks, the tenancy agreements will be clear and fair and tenancies are available for a minimum of one year.
