There are a variety of grants available.

Getting extra help

The Tower Hamlets Home Improvement Agency (THHIA) has been set up by the council to help the elderly, disabled and low-income homeowners apply for grants and loans, and is based within the Private sector housing improvement team.

Eligibility for grants varies according to tenure. Please discuss the details with the Private housing improvement team.

The Department of health publish a Keep Warm Keep Well Winter Guide 2005/06. Ask the Energy Efficiency Unit for copies (in English and Bengali).

The Older/ disabled persons decorating scheme

The Older/ disabled persons decorating scheme is funded by the council. You may be eligible to have two rooms in your home decorated (paint or wallpaper). At present, you are automatically included in the programme if you are:

  • a council tenant in Tower Hamlets
  • over 65
  • in receipt of housing benefit, income support and/ or disability living allowance
  • not living with anyone aged between 18 and 60.

The age criteria may change each year. Eligible tenants for that year will be contacted by letter.

24-hour Repairs Help Centre

If your home belongs to a Housing Association or other landlord, contact them directly.

If you don't have a telephone, you can call the Repairs Help Centre free of charge from your local housing office or One Stop Shop.
