Moving out of Tower Hamlets

Moving out of Tower Hamlets into another London borough

Due to a change in the law, it is now possible for people to apply to join the housing list in another area.

Tower Hamlets Council does not offer this service. If you would like to do this, you should directly approach the council or other housing providers, such as housing associations, in the area you wish to move to.

Information about all the London boroughs is available from the London Councils website.

Information about housing associations is available from the Housing Corporation website.

We no longer register our residents for the HOMES scheme unless there is an extenuating need for you to move to a particular area. This is because the scheme is dependent on another housing provider (whether Council, Registered Social Landlord or Charity) accepting a nomination from us on your behalf. We have very little success with this, and it is rare for us to be able to help someone move to another high demand area.

Moving out of London

If you are interested in moving out of London, Tower Hamlets Council may be able to help you move to areas of low housing demand, such as the midlands and the north east.
The council’s ‘moving out of London scheme’ can help tenants with a cash allowance to help with the cost of going to view a property outside London, and with the cost of moving.
This is a life-changing decision, but many families have moved successfully to these areas from all around London and the south east. It is an option we would encourage all those waiting for housing to carefully consider.
