Private sector housing renewal strategy

The council is committed to improving the quality of housing across all tenures, including the private owner-occupied sector.

Tower Hamlets has some of the best and some of the worst private sector housing in the country. The ‘private sector house condition survey’, carried out in Tower Hamlets in 2002, revealed that a disproportionate number of elderly people in Tower Hamlets live in the worst of the private sector housing stock.

Poor quality housing has a detrimental effect on the health of the people living in those houses and on the quality of life in an area. Elderly or vulnerable homeowners do not always have the necessary resources to keep their homes in good repair without assistance.

What the council is doing

We have developed a the 'Private Sector Renewal and Empty Properties Framework 2004-2007' (PDF, 500kb) to try to deal with these problems.
