Reselling the home you bought under right to buy scheme

What happens if I sell my home after buying it under the right to buy scheme?

You do not need our permission to sell your home. However, it is important that you inform the council. This is one of your obligations under your lease agreement. It also helps speed things up if you tell us as soon as possible.

Will I have to repay my right to buy discount?*

RTB applications received on or before 17 th January 2005

If you sell your home within the first three years:

  • within the first year, you will have to repay all the discount you received under the right to buy scheme
  • within the second year, two thirds of this discount must be repaid
  • within the third year, one third of the discount must be repaid.

After three full years, you are free to sell without paying back any of the discount.

RTB applications received after 17 th January 2005

If you sell your home during the first five years, you will have to repay some or all of your discount The amount you repay will be a percentage of the resale value of the property.

What if I want to sub-let my home?

You can sub-let your home provided you notify the service charge team You will need to let us know:

  • the names of the people you sub-let your home to
  • how long you intend to sub-let the property
  • your forwarding address if you intend to live elsewhere

The council will require you to enter into a Deed of Covenant for sub-letting. This will depend on the type of lease you have and how long you intend to sub-let the property. There is a charge for this service.
