Decorating for older and disabled tenants

The Council’s decorating programme for older and disabled tenants was launched in November 1999. In its first five years more than 3,000 homes of older and disabled residents have been decorated.

Since May 2006, the programme has been delivered in partnership with other Registered Social Landlord’s (RSL’s) in the borough: East End Homes, Poplar Harca, and Island Homes.

The programme is partly funded by Supporting People to help those residents keep independent in their own home. If you are included in the programme we will decorate any two rooms of your choice. You can also choose the colour of paint and/or the wallpaper you would like.

Who can have their home decorated?

You are automatically included in the programme, if you are:

  • a tenant of the Council, East End Homes, Poplar Harca or Island Homes; and
  • over the age of 65; and
  • in receipt of Housing Benefit, Income Support;
    or
  • a tenant of the above; and
  • over the age of 60; and
  • in receipt of Disability Living Allowance.

We may not be able to include you in our programme if you have someone aged 18-60 living with you, because of limited resources.

This scheme is only open to council tenants and tenants of our partner RSL’s - if you are a leaseholder or have applied for the Right to Buy you are not eligible.

How do I get on the Scheme?

At the start of each year we automatically write to everyone, in receipt of benefit, who is in the age band that is targeted that year.

You should only contact us if you start receiving benefit during the year or you do not receive benefit but receive a small occupational pension or income and we will decide whether we can include your home.
