Garages & car spaces

The council deals with the letting and management of council owned garages and car spaces on housing estates. Garages and car spaces are for private use only and not for commercial activities, for example car repairs

There is a charge for garages and car spaces. Discounts may apply to residents with a disabled person’s permit (also known as a blue badge). Please ask your local housing office for details.

Garages are intended for the storage of motor vehicles. They are not to be used for the storage of any other goods

You should not sublet your garage or car space to anyone else.

Who can apply for a garage or car space?

Anyone can apply to rent a council garage or car space, but we give priority to residents with a disabled person’s permit who live on our estates.

How to apply for a garage or car space

1) You need to fill in an application form and send it to us. You can either contact your local housing office, and we will send you one by post, or you can download a Parking application form (PDF, 35K)
2. Complete the form and post or hand it to your local housing office
3. We will then put you on the appropriate waiting list, and send you confirmation that your application has been received. How long you have to wait for a garage or car space depends on the area you want, and how many other people are waiting.

When your turn for a garage or car space is reached

We will:

  • contact you
  • ensure that your circumstances haven't changed, for example that you don’t owe the council any rent.

You need to:

  • provide us with proof of vehicle ownership, for example a valid log book with the correct name and address.
  • provide an MOT certificate, tax and insurance details
  • complete a licence agreement. (The licence sets out your agreement to follow a set of rules known as ‘conditions of licence ’.)
  • complete an estate parking permit application. (car spaces only). You will need a permit to park your vehicle in a designated bay as the council operates controlled parking on most council housing estates within Tower Hamlets .

You will not be offered a garage or car space if you:

  • are in rent arrears or have other debts to the council.
  • if your proof of vehicle ownership, log book, tax, MOT certificate or insurance details are not valid.

For more details about controlled parking see our page estate parking service page.

If you want to give up your garage or car space

We require seven days advance notice in writing to your local housing office if you want to give up your garage or car space

When you give us back the keys, the garage should be empty and swept through. We will charge you if we have to clear it.
