Applying for home contents insurance

The council does not automatically provide home insurance (sometimes called ‘household contents insurance’) to council tenants. We do, however, strongly advise all council tenants to take out home insurance in some form.

What is home insurance?

Home insurance can cover items such as your furniture and personal belongings against theft, and damage from fire or burst pipes.

The council’s home contents insurance scheme

As a tenant, you are entitled to insure the contents of you council home with an insurance company of your choice.

However, we do offer council tenants comprehensive insurance cover within our own home contents insurance scheme.

Applying for the council’s home contents insurance scheme ...

1. You need to fill in an application form and send it to us. You can either contact your local rents team, and we will send you one by post, or you can download a home contents insurance application form (PDF 105K)
2. We will look at your completed application form to make sure you meet all the relevant conditions
3. Within 10 working days we will write to you and tell you our decision
4. If we accept your application, we will send you a policy booklet, schedule and confirmation of the premium you will need to pay
5. If your application is refused, we will tell you why.

Applications will not be accepted from applicants who are in rent arrears.

How do I make a claim under council’s home contents insurance scheme?

If you are covered under our scheme, and need to make a claim:

1. Obtain an official claim form by telephoning us on one of the numbers shown below.
2. Complete the form and send it to the council's insurance brokers (see reverse of the claim form for address details)
