Learning disabilities

A person is considered to have a learning disability if they meet three criteria. Firstly, that they have an IQ of 70 or below; secondly that they have difficulties in social functioning, so that in some way they will find coping unsupported with daily life difficult; and lastly that these first two have been the case since the person was a child (i.e. younger than 18).

Learning disabilities are often, though by no means always, associated with physical disabilities and conditions. Sometimes the learning disability can be so mild that it is barely noticed; other people have such profound learning disabilities that they will always need help and support in every aspect of their lives.
Learning disabilities are lifelong conditions.

In some people, several overlapping learning disabilities may be apparent. Other people may have a single, isolated learning problem that has little impact on their lives.

The Tower Hamlets Community Learning Disability Service (CLDS) social work team works with people above the age of 18 who have a learning disability and commissions appropriate services such as employment support or supported accommodation following community care assessments.

The team can support people who are experiencing abuse. It also works with children in transition to adult services. The team also carries out carers' assessments, and works jointly with health staff within the CLDS, and with other agencies to provide a comprehensive service to users with learning disabilities.
