What's new

Information on the processing of applications for the 2008/09 academic year

Both paper and on-line applications are now being received by the Student Finance Section.  The IT functionality supplied by the Student Loans Company only currently allows decisions to be made on non-means tested applications, i.e. those applications where the applicant wants only the minimum support of fees loan, 75% of the living cost loan and no maintenance grant.

Applicants who want means-tested support i.e. the maximum support available to them, will have their cases means tested once the functionality is available in the latter part of May.

This should not disrupt the application process, but may mean that applicants do not receive a response to their application for some weeks.  The Student Finance Section can only ask for applicants to be patient during this period.

Student finance is the generic name for the package of grants and loans available to students in higher education, and is given under the student support regulations.

The following information deals with that support which is delivered as grants, i.e. that do not have to be repaid (except in cases of overpayment) as do student loans. Student finance grants come in the following categories for the 2008/09 academic year

  • Means tested grants for dependants:
    • Parents Learning Allowance
    • Adult Dependants Grant
    • Childcare grant
  • A means tested higher education grant
  • Non-means tested Disabled Student Allowances
  • A means tested grant for students taking designated part-time courses
  • A means tested grant for additional travel expenditure in certain cases such as:
    • The necessity to travel abroad as part of a course
    • The need for travel support by disabled students
    • The need for travel support by medical and dentistry students attending universities and hospitals away from their main site
