Educational support for ethnic minorities

The council provides support and advice to schools in Tower Hamlets to assist them in raising the educational achievements of ethnic minority pupils. A major part of this work is to also increase the educational achievements of pupils for who English is an additional language or who are asylum seekers and refugee pupils.

The council helps schools to increase the educational and academic achievements of ethnic and other minority pupils by:

• Advising schools on how to effectively manage all aspects of education and support for ethnic minorities
• Providing training for schools on developing strategies for the education of ethnic minorities
• Helping schools to audit their education needs for ethnic minorities
• Giving support to school based staff who are specialists in ethnic minority achievement and additional key staff to train other staff members in the rest of the school
• Helping to put specialist ethnic minority achievement teachers in touch with each other so that they can share their knowledge
• Assisting in the monitoring and evaluation of the use of the Ethnic minority achievement grant.
