School catering

The council runs the education contract services which is a non-profit organisation within the Tower Hamlets education department. The education contract services provides catering and cleaning services to schools and other organisations across Tower Hamlets. The service is also responsible for the home meals service on behalf of social services.

The education contract services operates:

• the catering service in 98% of schools
• the cleaning service to 40% of schools
• the welfare catering service throughout Tower Hamlets.

Schools hold their own budgets for catering and cleaning services and choose their own providers.

The education contract services aims to offer a value for money service to schools and every year considers innovative ways in which the service can be improved. An agreement with schools is set up for these services with annual renewals negotiated with the schools.

The education contract services also supplies the following:

• Catering for functions
• Training and meeting rooms

Catering for functions

The education contract services has special catering menus which have been designed especially to be healthy, nutritious and appropriate for all functions. The service can offer breakfasts for early morning meetings, refreshments and a range of lunch menus for training sessions, meetings and any other events.

Training and meeting rooms

Large rooms with a seating capacity for 25 people in each of the rooms are available at the Toby Lane council offices which can be used for either training or meetings. The use of televisions, videos, flip charts, white boards and overhead projectors is included in the rates below.

The Toby Lane council office meeting rooms are available from 8am until 4pm and are charged out at the following rates:

Half Day: £50
Full Day: £100

Refreshments, including lunch can be ordered from the services’ special catering menu. You can place your order using the special catering menu order form.
