Joining is free
Joining the library service is easy and free. All you need to do is:
- Visit one of our libraries, or Idea Stores
- Provide proof of name and address.
Who can use Tower Hamlets’ library services?
- There is no minimum age to join the library
- Anyone with a permanent address can join
- You can also use Tower Hamlets libraries if you are a member of any of the London Consortium Libraries.

Membership gives you a library card that you can use at any of the Tower Hamlets libraries.
London Consortium Libraries include:
- Newham
- Redbridge
- Waltham Forest
- Havering
- Barking & Dagenham
- Wandsworth
- Brent
- Richmond

Membership gives you a library card that you can use at any of the Tower Hamlets libraries, Idea Stores and London Consortium Libraries
With a library card you can borrow up to 12 items as soon as you join and enjoy free access to the Internet and online subscription information services.
Library charges
Borrowing books and books on audio tape is free for everyone. However, we do charge a small fee for some other services. For more details, please see our libraries fees & charges page.
Many services are free to people who are registered blind or deaf. For more information about services for people with disabilities contact your local library.
