Offices
- electronic door locks and intercoms will control who is allowed in the building, and coded locks or key card locks on internal doors will restrict entry further;
- lock unsupervised external doors;
- front and rear door locks should be to BS 3621 standard;
- close and lock windows if you're leaving a room unattended;
- don't leave valuables unattended, and use personal lockers;
- ideally, keep cash boxes in a safe. If this isn't possible, keep changing the location of the cash box;
- keep computer and electronic equipment out of sight, security marked and secured to desks. Don't leave laptops or portable equipment unattended or in sight;
- a good-quality alarm system can complement other security precautions.
Security
Put yourself in the shoes of a criminal and think how you would break into the premises and then secure these areas.
- Strengthen doors and window.
- Securely lock all possible entrances and exits overnight.
- Use a good quality safe to protect valuables.
- Consider secure cages.
- Install a burglar alarm.
- Consider CCTV.
- Use lighting.
- Consider anti-graffiti paint or plastic coatings for windows.
- Consider devices to prevent people braking into your premises with vehicles. Think about grilles or shutters.
- Keep boundaries secure.
