Crime and Drugs Reduction Strategy 2008-2011

The draft Crime and Drugs Reduction Strategy 2008-2011 has now been published for consultation. The Strategy sets out how we will make Tower Hamlets a better place for living safely over next three years. The strategy has been developed in response to crime statistics and the concerns of local people. We welcome comments on the strategy from those who live or work in Tower Hamlets.

Community views also played a key part in developing our priorities. We
analysed data from all consultation exercises undertaken in the last 3 years. In addition in 2007/08 we conducted 10 focus groups with diverse groups within the community to identify concerns and appropriate responses. We also conducted a survey with 1,100 residents asking them about key issues, including anti social behaviour, policing and hate crime.

Analysis of these fed into our Strategic Assessment which was then discussed by residents at our Police and Community Safety Board.

The strategy will be implemented, through the delivery plan, by the Tower Hamlets Partnership. The Partnership brings together all of the Borough’s key stakeholders: residents, the council, the police, the fire service, the health service, public services including schools, the Probation Service, Tower Hamlets Homes, Registered Social Landlords, voluntary and community groups, faith communities and businesses.

How are we performing?

We have made significant progress is cutting crime in the Borough in recent years, and in the last three years overall crime has fallen by 24%. Key successes from 2007/08 include:

  • Robbery fell by over 28%
  • Theft from person fell by 9%
  • Gun crime fell by over 30%
  • Burglary fell by over 3%

  • Say no to crime and anti-social behaviour e.g. don't buy goods you suspect may be stolen
  • Attend community meetings with your local Safer Neighbourhood Team
  • Work with senior Police and Council officers to develop our approach to crime at the Police and Community Safety Forum
  • Stay updated by signing up for the Community Safety E-bulletin
  • Become involved as a volunteer. There are also lots of opportunities with organisations such as Victim Support, the Youth Offending Team, the Hate Crime Team or the Police
