Tower Hamlets victim support scheme

Tower Hamlets victim support scheme (THVSS) was set up in 1986 to provide support and information to victims of crime in Tower Hamlets. THVSS is an independent, registered charity (Number 294641).

The team consists of trained paid staff and volunteers to provide the services. THVSS has three objectives:

  • To show care and concern for victims of crime, giving free, confidential support, advice and information.
  • To take up issues of concern with relevant voluntary and statutory agencies relating to the victims needs (Social Policy) and
  • To support witnesses at Thames Magistrate and Youth Court. THVSS provides a crisis intervention service, which provides emotional and practical support to clients and can refer them to specialist agencies.

The THVSS specialist support service tends to be longer term and often more complex. These cases are high priority and THVSS will always endeavour to make direct contact with victims of these crimes.

Tower Hamlets mediation service

Tower Hamlets mediation service trains volunteers from the local community in basic mediation skills. The service aims to help anyone who is in conflict with his or her neighbour and is there to:

  • Help people in the community resolve their problems in positive and constructive ways.
  • Make realistic agreements with their neighbours about how they want to live together safely and amicably in the future.
  • Encourage early resolution of neighbour disputes before they escalate into other forms of anti-social behaviour or harassment, and before the effects ripple out into the community.

In addition, Tower Hamlets mediation service has recently begun an innovative youth and conflict project that focuses on large group mediation for groups of young people in conflict with one another or with older residents on estates and in Tower Hamlets communities.
