Car security
Vehicle crime continues to be a severe problem. The ever-growing number of claims means insurance companies have had to increase premiums substantially, especially on certain high performance and prestigious models favoured by car thieves.
Basic measures
There are many simple, common sense measures you can take to ensure you’re not a victim of vehicle crime:
- Park your car where it can be seen by passers by and at night in a well-lit area.
- Never, even for a moment, leave your keys in the ignition of leave any of the doors unlocked, remember this especially at petrol stations.
- Always activate your steering lock even in your own drive or garage.
- Always check that all the windows and sunroof are fully closed.
- If you must leave valuables in your vehicle do not leave them in view conceal them, lock them in the glove box, or better still in the boot.
- Don’t leave documents, which may aid the thief, such as your driving licence, MOT and insurance certificate, in your vehicle.
- Never leave luggage unattended on the roof rack.
- Thieves steal wheels, especially alloy ones, valuable parts and even siphon off fuel. So fit locking wheel nuts and lock your fuel filler cap.
- Use a lock for the steering wheel, gearshift or brakes. Some locks incorporate alarms. Look for the 'sold secure' logo . Always activate your steering lock even in your own drive or garage.
- There is a range of more sophisticated security devices which you could consider - including alarms, sensing devices and vehicle tracking systems. It's important to get any alarm installed properly. Although it's possible to fit simple devices yourself, more advanced systems should be professionally fitted by a recommended installer. Alarms should conform to BS6803. Check before you buy: is it 'sold secure'?
- Car stereos - consider a coded or removable system, one which is very difficult to remove, or is locked to the steering wheel. Mark the stereo with your postcode.
- Mobile phone aerials and holders attract thieves. Don't hide your phone under the seat or in the glove box. Take it with you or lock it in the boot.
- Look for the ‘Secured Car Parks’ logo when seeking a parking place.
