Mobile phone security

Immobilise phone crime

Mobile phone networks can now stop stolen and lost phones being used on any network, even it the SIM card has been changed. Call your network provider, or if you do not know your network provider’s number call 08701 123 123.

This will enable you to get your stolen or lost phone blocked, across every network and help stop mobile phone crime.

Keep phone details

By providing the Police with some basic information about your phone you can make it more difficult for a thief to use it. Keep a record of:

  • Phone make and model
  • Fascia details (colour etc)
  • Phone number
  • Serial /IMEI number (the 15 digit serial or IMEI number helps to identify your phone. In most phones it can be found by keying * # 0 6 #, or by looking behind the battery. This number could help the Police trace ownership quickly).
  • PIN number

Use security marking

Permanently security mark both the battery and phone with your postcode and house number or the first two initials of your house name. If you are using ultra-violet markers remember to renew the marks every couple of months. For more information on security marking contact the Crime Prevention Officer at your local police station.

Register your phone

Register your phone with your network operator. If you report your phone stolen they will be able to block the phone. This will mean that your phone cannot be used on any network. This will also protect all your private numbers if you have stored them on the SIM card.

Be careful in public

Your phone is a valuable item. When using your phone:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Try not to use your phone in crowded areas or where you feel unsafe.
  • Try not to use your phone whilst walking in busy streets.
  • Avoid displaying your phone where it is in public view – a visible phone may be a target for a thief.
  • Keep your phone with you at all times and do not leave it unattended.

Always lock your phone

Always use your phone security lock or PIN number. This will make your phone less valuable to a potential thief. Most phones can store telephone numbers on the SIM card, if you lock the phone a potential thief will find it much harder to access all your private numbers.
