About Smokefree Tower Hamlets
New smokefree laws started on 1 July 2007
On 1 July 2007, new smoke free laws came into force. It is now against the law to smoke in virtually all public places and workplaces across England. Public transport and work vehicles are covered by the legislation, as are public places that are more than 50 per cent enclosed. ‘No smoking’ signs will make it clear where people can’t smoke.
The new legislation is designed to protect people from the significant health hazard of second-hand smoke. Local councils including Tower Hamlets are responsible for enforcing the new law. The council is working to ensure that local businesses and residents have access to the information and resources they need to comply with the new laws.
