Public transport improvements

By law the money from congestion charging has to be spent on improving London's transport system.

The Mayor also recognises that public transport improvements are needed urgently so that people can have a choice in travel other than paying the £5 daily congestion charge.

Spending plans for this money include:

  • more frequent & reliable bus services
  • new bus routes
  • restructuring fares on public transport
  • safety and security improvement schemes
  • improvements to the walking and cycling environment

In Tower Hamlets two new bus services are proposed.

  • The 205 route will provide a link from Whitechapel to Paddington via Liverpool Street and Euston stations
  • Route 388 will run from Mansion House along Bethnal Green Road, terminating at Hackney Wick.

Tower Hamlets is also lobbying for an additional new bus service between the Isle of Dogs/Canary Wharf and Liverpool Street.

In the longer term the completion of the East London Line extension and Cross Rail will benefit travellers around the cordon and the Mayor has more plans for other major infrastructure improvements such as light rail and tram link schemes.
