Road & highways - Introduction
The council is responsible for maintaining the roads and pavements. When the local authority takes on the legal responsibility for a road or highway it becomes adopted.
Adopted highways are inspected on a regular basis. Any area of road or pavement which the inspector thinks may become a danger to road users or pedestrians is noted and a repair arranged. If during inspection streets are considered to need more extensive treatment this is noted and appropriate reports are undertaken at a later date.
Each year a visual survey is carried out to assess the condition of all principal and other classified roads that are in need of and treatment and minor repairs.
This provides us with the information needed to draw up the council's annual structural maintenance programme.
