Road markings & signs

The Highway Authority provides and maintains signs in order to give information to the road users.

These include:

  • regulatory signs - signs with red circles
  • warning signs - mostly triangular
  • direction signs - mostly rectangular. Destinations and map type
  • information signs - mostly rectangular

All signs on the highway must be authorised by the authority. Special signs are allowed but only with prior approval of the Department for Transport.

Tourism signing

Tourism signing provides an important opportunity for both tourism businesses and local economies and is implemented in a positive and constructive manner.

There is of course an advertising element as it helps to generate more impromptu visits. However, the primary purpose is to safely guide those wishing to visit a tourist destination, or to indicate facilities that a tourist would not reasonably expect to find in a particular location.

Red routes

The council does not provide this service. Transport for London is the authority for all red routes in London.

Red route controls are enforced by the police and traffic wardens. They are not enforced by the council's parking attendants.

For more information go to: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/contact_home.shtml

What is a red route?

A red route is a road where stopping, parking or loading is not allowed. There are some exceptions to this general rule, and they are indicated by signs where they apply.

Red route roads have a single or double red line painted on them. Double red lines apply at all times. Single red lines usually apply during the working day (the exact times will be indicated by signs on the road).

Examples of red route signage and markings can be found on the highway code website
