Council tax
Domestic council tax is the contribution that people who live in Tower Hamlets make to the many services provided by the borough, such as street lighting, collecting rubbish, schools and libraries as well as the police and fire service.
Most homes in Tower Hamlets are subject to council tax. There is one liability per dwelling, whether it is a house, bungalow, flat, maisonette, mobile home or houseboat, and whether it is owned or rented.
Each home has been allocated to one of eight bands.
Business rates
Business rates, sometimes called non-domestic rates, are collected by local councils.
These rates are the way in which local businesses, and others who occupy non-domestic property, contribute towards the cost of local services.
