A person is qualified to register to vote if he or she is:

  • a British citizen
  • a Commonwealth citizen
  • a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, or

See a full list of nationalities qualified to vote (Word 50k)

You need to be on the electoral register to be able to vote. If you are qualified to vote you are required by law to give your name and address so that you can be included on the electoral register.

A young person should be included on the registration form if he or she reaches 18 years old during the period that the register is in force. Young people are entitled to vote at elections as soon as they turn 18.

If you miss the annual registration update, you can still register to vote after October 15 by filling out a different form, which you can get from the electoral services office or by downloading the elector registration form (pdf 28kb)
