Get involved
One of the roles of overview & scrutiny is to act as a community leader and pick up on issues that concern local people, communities and stakeholders.
The scrutiny process encourages public debate and greater involvement by local people, particularly on issues that interest or affect them. The scrutiny team encourages people to participate in a variety of ways including:
Attend meetings
Most scrutiny meetings are open to the public and you can listen to the debate and discussion. The only exceptions are when information or issues that are confidential are being discussed. This doesn’t happen very often.
Meetings are generally held in the Town Hall, Mulberry Place, 5 Clove Crescent, but sometimes take place at other locations in the borough. If you have contributed any information for a scrutiny review you may be called to attend a meeting to give evidence as a witness.
We ensure all our venues are accessible. If you have specific requirements – such as the need for an interpreter or access requirements – please contact the scrutiny team in advance of the meeting so we can make the necessary arrangements.
Raise an issue
You can contact the scrutiny team directly to have your say about a current scrutiny topic or to comment on a past scrutiny review by completing the following contact scrutiny form.
Make a deputation or present a petition
All citizens (that is people living and working in the borough) have the right to present or to request a councillor to present a petition on their behalf or as part of a deputation to address the overview and scrutiny committees/sub committee.
What Scrutiny cannot do
The scrutiny process is unable to respond to individual complaints about a service. There is a dedicated corporate complaints team to deal with such issues.
