Data protection and freedom of information

The Data Protection Act 1998 is designed to cover the collection, storage, processing and distribution of personal data. Each individual has the right to access their personal data. The Act also places obligations on the data controllers who use and record personal data.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 provides a general right of access to information held by public authorities.

On 1 July 2005 a new European Directive came into force which allows people to apply to re-use information held by Tower Hamlets Council.

Data Protection Act

The Data Protection Act is designed to cover the collecting, storing, processing and distribution of personal data. It gives rights to individuals about whom information is recorded. 

Freedom of Information advice

Tower Hamlets Council can advise residents on how to request public information that the council may hold.
