The school is located within the Globe Road Conservation Area, on the corner of Globe Road and Gawber Street, and was built in 1874. In many ways the three-storey, Victorian brick building lacked the flexibility, space, circulation and access expected in modern-day schools. Following consultation with the school’s senior leadership, an overall scope of works was developed. The design enhances learning environments and adds the flexibility and improved layouts required for the school's optimal operation.

The works include:

  • A two storey extension with refurbishment and reconfiguration of the internal areas to form a new reception classroom and staff preparation room with an accessible science garden on the floor above.
  • New level entrance to provide direct access to new secure entrance lobby.
  • Relocated reception and administration spaces on the ground floor adjacent to the main entrance.
  • New headteacher and deputy head's rooms within a central area of the ground floor.
  • Library relocated to the mezzanine level near the ground floor.
  • New lift.
  • Alterations to classrooms to form a new hall with performance space.
  • New WC facilities.
  • New hygiene, reprographics, multi-purpose and library/ reading rooms.

Whilst the building has no formal conservation listing, it does have elements of brick detailing of historical architectural significance. The extension was designed to appear to be part of the original building with materials and detailing to match the existing building.

The new extension is located over an area previously occupied by a single storey nursery toilet facility so that direct access will now be provided onto the nursery playground from the classrooms. This extension will provide a valuable preparation space for the staff, improved open plan area for the reception and nursery classrooms with direct access to the play ground and an outdoor science garden on the roof of the extension.

Extensive alterations and refurbishments are proposed for all levels to provide larger and more flexible spaces as well as installation of a lift to provide access.

As the proposals include extensive alterations and refurbishments throughout the school, works are being progressed in sections to ensure the works can be safely completed while the school is fully occupied. The works are currently under construction and are due for completion early in 2011.
