Recycling and waste

Recycling in Tower Hamlets is quick and easy. It’s about making a simple choice between putting items in your bin or recycling them.

Even better than recycling is reducing the amount of waste we produce in the first place and this can save you lots of money too.

Christmas tree recycling

Last year around 500 Christmas trees were collected for recycling - they started a whole new life as compost.

To recycle a Christmas tree, residents in blocks of flats should contact their housing manager to find out about local arrangements. Those living in houses can leave their trees on the boundary of their property on their garden waste / food waste recycling day.

Christmas tree collections will take place from January 5 January up until January 23. Only real Christmas trees can be recycled and pots, soil and decorations should be removed as these cannot be recycled or composted.

Christmas trees can also be taken to the Reuse and Recycling centre at Yabsley Street, E14 9RG. The centre is open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 6pm and Bank holidays 9am to 4.30pm.

Swap event

When: Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 11am to 3pm

Where: The Centre, Community Hall, 32 Merchant Street, Bow E3 4LX

Have a clear out of items you no longer want and take away bits and pieces you need for free at this fun event.

Things to bring along:

  • books
  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • clothes
  • paired shoes
  • toys
  • bric-a-brac.

The items must be clean, in good condition and something that you are proud to hand on. In return you can swap them for anything that takes your fancy.

Large items can also be swapped, such as furniture or even a shed, but they are not to be brought to the event. Instead bring along a photo or description of the item along with your contact details.

Items such as household batteries, printer cartridges, low energy light bulbs, bikes and small electrical appliances like hairdryers, toasters, kettles and mobile phones can be brought along for recycling, but cannot be swapped.

Waste collections

Tower Hamlets Council provides a weekly refuse and recycling collection to residents and figures released for April to September 2013 show that a staggering 2.27 million collections have taken place over that period.
