Bygrove Primary School

The extension to Bygrove Primary School
comprises of a single storey extension to the front of the school
with some refurbishment works to the existing classrooms. The new
building will comprise of a multi-purpose room, therapy/medical
room, staff room and associated amenities. The new building will be
built adjacent to the existing corridor which will be retained and
connected to.
The new works will comprise of:
- a new extension
- a covered play area for nursery children
- new landscaping in the nursery playground
The new extension will have both insulated render and
timber cladding with composite timber and
aluminium double glazed windows. The new building will
have a green roof (sedum-vegetation blanket) with
a portion of the existing roof to be replaced with insulation and a
bitumen covering.
The internal partitions will comprise of block and
Fermacel boarding on metal firings with a paint
finish.
The works to Bygrove Primary school will also
incorporate some hard and soft landscaping around
the immediate areas of the extension.
The Building and Technical Services team have been working with
the school for the last six months working towards a design that
will transform the school and provide much needed facilities. This
has involved consultation with the key
stakeholders of the school and the pupils
of the school. This was conducted during the summer term 2009.
The pupils suggested the use of the green roof, they highlighted
that they were having problems with the taps and toilet floors in
the school and they also requested outdoor lights in the playground
for winter months. A green roof has been incorporated into the
design; additionally, since we received this feedback, all the
toilet facilities in the school have been completely refurbished
and external lights have now been included in the design of the
area around the new extension.
Comments received from the key stakeholder consultation was that
the children find the classrooms dark, there are no Special
Educational Needs facilities at the school and that they would like
sustainable design features in the school. In response to this the
architect and engineers design solar hot water to feed the taps in
the new extension and a very efficient boiler to run the underfloor
heating. On of the main aspects of the extension is to
improve the Special Educational Needs facilities;
this will be in the form of a hygiene room and
therapy room. As part of a project that happened
before this project, new doors/windows have been installed in
several of the classrooms with floor to ceiling glazed
doors. This will greatly improve the amount of natural light
that comes into the classrooms.
This project is due to start on site in
February 2010. The extension will be finished for the school
to use following the summer holidays 2010.
