Building and Technical Services, an internal architectural team
for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, have been commissioned by
the Children, Schools and Families Directorate to review the
accommodation at Arnhem Wharf Primary School. The brief was
to look at ways to expand pupil places within the
school to allow the school to be increased from a
two-form entry to three-form pupil entry at the
same time as looking ahead to integrate the government's objectives
of the new Primary Capital Programme. Phase 1, of
approximately 700sq m is now complete and occupied by the
school. Phase 2, of approximately 1000sq m, is scheduled for
completion by September 2011.
Phase 2
The works include:
- A new-build double storey learning wing and a
new large open plan atrium to form an internal courtyard linking
the extension with the existing school.
- Multi-purpose spaces.
- Group rooms.
- Covered atrium connecting to the existing
building.
- New classrooms.
- New library.
- New music room.
- Refurbished walkways to existing
classrooms.
- New WC facilities.
- New landscaping.
The design offers the school a variety of multi-purpose
use spaces and new classrooms. The new main linking atrium
space which is proposed to be utilised for main school
assemblies, drama performances, lunch time two-phased
school dinners, general circulation and social
interaction while providing the school with an area to
accommodate the pupils during wet or winter
play-times when indoor activities can be organised. Large
expanses of skylights are designed within the
atrium to create a bright and open environment,
similar to an external courtyard.
The proposed external facades add a fresh, contemporary
appearance to offer pupils an element of excitement when
entering their learning environment. The building as a whole aims
to be low energy, robust, low maintenance and
fully accessible for persons with
disabilities.
The landscaping will be a mix of soft and hard
surfacing for general play activities and ball games.
Areas of planting have also been included. Facades
are designed to include a green ‘wall’ system,
which will ensure the project contributes positively towards the
landscaping and immediate habitat environment on the school
grounds.
The works are due to commence construction during 2010 and are
due for completion in 2011.
