Primary school admissions
Starting reception class in 2014/15
Pupils usually start primary school in the year of
their fifth birthday. If your child is born between
September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010 this will be in
Parents who are offered a reception class place for their
child can defer until later in the school year. The
child must enter school by the beginning of the school term
following their fifth birthday and within the school year the
offer was made.
A deferred place cannot be given to another
Please note that attendance at a nursery class does not
guarantee the offer of a place in Reception Class.

How to apply for a place
You can search
for a school and apply
online or complete a paper application form.
If you make an online application you should not complete a
paper application form.

If you have not been offered a place at a school of your
preference you can appeal that
decision. The appeal panel is independent of the
council and schools in the borough.
If you wish to appeal you can download an admission
appeals form (PDF 187kb) or call pupil
admissions. Please include any evidence or supporting material with
your appeal form and you must give the grounds for
your appeal at the time the appeal is lodged. You may appeal for
more than one school.
