Secondary school admissions

Starting secondary school in 2015

Pupils usually start secondary school in the September following their 11th birthday. If your child is born between September 1, 2003 and August 31, 2004 this will be in September 2015.

Before you apply

Please read the Ready for secondary school in Tower Hamlets booklet (PDF, 1.7mb) for information on how to apply for a secondary school place.

You can also get a copy from Tower Hamlets primary schools or by contacting the Pupil Services team on 020 7364 5006.

We have also produced a video on secondary transfer to help guide parents through the process.

How to apply for a place

You can search for a school and apply online or complete a paper application form.

If you make an online application you should not complete a paper application.

You can apply online from September 1 until October 31, 2014. Please call Pupil Services on 020 7364 5006 for more information.

Important changes to Bow School admissions 2014

Please note that Bow School will change from a boys school to a co-educational (boys and girls) school from September 2014. During the first five years of its transition a special exemption will apply to school admissions at Year 7 as follows:

  • in the event of the school being oversubscribed the 270 paces will be divided equally, between boys and girls. This means that no more than 135 boys and 135 girls will be offered places, in accordance to the oversubscription criteria for community schools
  • this exemption could mean that some children will be refused a place, because there are more applications than the 135 places available for their gender. However, after March 2, 2015 (offer day) any places that become available will be filled regardless of gender.
  • this arrangement only applies to applications for Year 7 entry in September. It will continue for each Year 7 entry up to and until September 2018.  Thereafter Bow School’s admissions will operate without  special regard to maintaining an equal balance of  gender.

Admission appeals

If you have not been offered a place at a school of your preference you can appeal that decision. The appeal panel is independent of the council and schools in the borough.

If you wish to appeal you can download an admission appeals form (PDF 187kb) or call pupil admissions. Please include any evidence or supporting material with your appeal form and you must give the grounds for your appeal at the time the appeal is lodged. You may appeal for more than one school.

Please check the appeal timetable 2015 (PDF, 40kb) for information on when you can appeal.
