A week of good news
East End Life, August 29
Last week there was much for us to cheer as a
community here in Tower Hamlets.
“Firstly, the Home Secretary’s decision to ban marches during
September thankfully mean the English Defence League’s proposed
march will not go ahead.”
This can only be considered good news
for our borough: the EDL’s aim was always to divide our community
by bringing their messages of hate and intolerance of different
faiths, cultures and backgrounds.
I am proud of the way our many
different communities live in harmony side by side, just as I am
proud of the way we stood together again and campaigned for the
march to be banned. I would like to thank everyone for the great
support we received.
The police’s decision is the right
one, and one that will hopefully prevent the EDL, or anyone else
for that matter, coming to our borough and attempting to divide us
by spreading hatred.
There was more good news for the
borough last week when GCSE results were announced on Thursday.
Once again, our students performed
exceptionally and I am delighted to say that we achieved our best
ever results.
More than that, the rapid improvement
we have made puts us amongst the most improved areas in the whole
country.
This is a fantastic achievement, and
together with the impressive A level results announced recently, is
further proof that the successful partnership between local schools
and the council is paying dividends, and is the best way forward
for the future of education in Tower Hamlets. Huge congratulations
to all our students.
Finally, I would like to send my best
wishes to the many residents that will be celebrating Eid ul-Fitr
this week. I hope that everyone in our community will enjoy the
celebratory spirit of Eid, which is a reminder of how our
religions’ shared values reach right across our borough and that we
are one community, one Tower Hamlets.
