Partnership is key to success
East End Life, July 4
Children's access to good education is a
basic right, and that is why improving the performance of our
schools is one of my key priorities.
Our young people are the future of this borough, and thanks to
the hard work of our schools and the council’s support, they are
achieving more than ever before.
We are now recognised as one of the
most improved local authorities in the country, and the new
facilities being developed through the Building Schools for the
Future programme will help continue that improvement.
And whilst some quarters have opted to
support academies, I believe the partnership between the council
and local schools that has served this borough so well is the best
way forward for our future generations.
Stepney Green Maths, Computing and
Science College typifies that successful partnership, and I was
delighted that it was recently graded as “outstanding” by
Ofsted.
I have seen further examples of our
young people’s talent through our Olympic poster competition.
With Olympic tickets up for grabs,
anyone aged between five and 16 can design a poster that shows off
all that the borough has to offer, and winning entries will be used
to welcome visitors coming here for the Olympics.
We’ve had some great entries so far,
and I urge all budding artists to send in their designs by July 14.
More information is available on the council’s website.
And whilst I am investing in the
future of this borough, I am not forgetting the present.
Last week, I met with families that
have already benefited from our Decent Homes programme, and others
who will soon see their home improved thanks to the £130 million we
are investing to make sure every council home in the borough is up
to Decent Homes standard.
All residents have a right to a good
education for their children and a warm, safe and supportive home
for their family. I am doing everything in my power to make sure
this becomes a reality for all.
