The sensory impairment service
What is the Sensory Impairment service?
The Sensory Impairment service helps anyone
who is deaf, blind, who has a hearing loss, visual loss or a dual
sensory loss. To access the services people must be over 18 years
and live in Tower Hamlets.
How can we help?
We can provide:
- Social work support.
- Information, support and advice.
- An assessment of your needs with regard to your sight loss,
hearing loss and dual sensory loss.
- Support services to meet your eligible needs following
assessment, this may include: home help and specialist
equipment.
- Rehabilitation training and equipment to encourage your
independent living skills.
- Mobility training.
- Classes in Braille and advice on IT equipment
- Communicator guides, BSL interpreters, a BSL video link and
interpreters in community languages.
- Links with local community groups and the NHS who work with
adults that have a sensory loss.
We run the following services every week:
The hearing clinic
Offers an advice and Information service,
available to all Tower Hamlets residents who are deaf or hard of
hearing. Equipment demonstrations will also be available. Contact
the Sensory Team to make an appointment or come to the drop in
clinic.
When: between 12noon and 1pm
every Tuesday.
Where: the Resource Centre in Southern Grove,
Mile End.
Low vision service
The Community Low Vision Service provides assessments for
magnifiers and eye shades. Equipment is issued free of charge. The
Service is for Tower Hamlets' adult residents who have a difficulty
seeing to perform everyday tasks, even when wearing their glasses.
The only criteria for attending the clinic is that the person has
had a sight test in the last 12 months. Contact the Sensory Team to
make an appointment.
When: every Wednesday

Low vision directory of services
Tower Hamlets council and NHS Tower Hamlets
have produced a directory of services for people with a visual
impairment.
