Welfare rights advice
The council funds a number of voluntary organisations to deliver
advice services to:
- maximise the income and take up of welfare benefits
entitlements of local people
- provide free and confidential benefits and tax credit
checks
- help with making claims – including form filling
- Help with benefit and tax credit queries and problems

There are a range of service delivery methods operating across
the advice service from drop-in sessions, appointments, home visits
and telephone advice and outreach provision. Information on
benefits and tax credits is also available on the national CAB
website.

Claim the max
The Claim the Max project provides benefits advice sessions at
various centres in Tower Hamlets. Each year millions of pounds of
benefits and tax credits go unclaimed. We want to ensure that Tower
Hamlets residents are claiming all their entitlements.
You may be able to claim:
- Attendance Allowance if you are 65 or over and you have a
disability or health problem
- Disability Living Allowance if you are under 65 and you have a
disability or health problem
- Carer’s allowance if you are looking after someone who has
claimed attendance allowance or disability allowance (middle or
high rate component)
- Income Support or income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance (if under
60)
- Pension Credit (60 or over) and you live on a low income or
have no income
- Child Tax Credit if you have children
- Working Tax Credit if you are working and:
- have children and are low paid
- you are a disabled person in low paid work
- you are over 25 with no children and in low paid work for over 30
hours per week
If you are NOT claiming any of these benefits or tax credits and
you think you might be entitled please contact your local advice agency or the Claim the Max
Outreach Project.
Outreach surgeries are held at various venues across the
borough.

support to people of working age from welfare to work. The
