Parental engagement programme
Skillsmatch runs a 10 week employability programme for parents
who are unemployed in Tower Hamlets. Delivered in schools, these
provide a convenient location for many parents who drop their
children at school in the morning. Sessions run weekly from
9am-12noon, and are based in three Tower Hamlets locations:
- Cubitt Town School on the Isle of Dogs
- Wapping Children's Centre
- Lawdale School parents' facility
Parents with children at any borough school are welcome to join
the course, but enrolment happens at the beginning of each term.
The course covers key modules such as:
- CV construction
- Confidence building
- Application form techniques
- Interview techniques
- Telephone techniques
- Job search

ELBA hospitality programme
ELBA has recently partnered with member
company, Restaurant Associates, to deliver a new project targeted
at East London residents. The pilot project, starting in April
2011, will adopt ELBA's best practice and award winning employment
model. The model has demonstrated strength in achieving targets,
expansion in employer relationships and growth in
opportunities opened to the local community. Restaurant
Associates will provide access to a variety of catering and
hospitality jobs through direct recruitment, including tailor-made
training-into-workprogrammes which will be delivered regularly
throughout the year.
Any candidate interested in registering and
being apart of this exciting new project must meet the following
criteria:
- 18 years plus
- Reside in the borough of Tower
Hamlets
- Not in receipt of Jobseekers
Allowance
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Where applicable agree to a CRB
check
Candidates who have little or no experience
and wish to build a career within catering and hospitality industry
will have an opportunity to access jobs through the route two,
training-into-work schemes.
We aim to offer monthly schemes which will
include:
- One week sector-specific employability
skills training, two-week non-paid placements, one
guaranteed interview per candidate leading to a possible job if
successful
- Candidates will have an opportunity to
network with potential employers, visit prestigious sites and gain
valuable knowledge from guest speakers including chef
demonstrations
- The Project Manager will lead on delivery of
all training-into-work delivery. Based over 12 months
starting in May 2011, we aim to train 120 candidates and conduct
cohorts of 15-20 candidates on a monthly basis.
All delivery will be based at East London
Business Alliance, within the training suite. All resources
will be provided by ELBA until candidates start work placements.
Access to a variety of different opportunities including:
- General assistants (catering and
hospitality)
- Chef (commis, chef de partie, sous and
head chef)
- Barista
- Reception
- Helpdesk
Where applicable, candidates may need to have
relevant experience. The recruitment process will
include:
- Recruitment open days
- One-to-one interview with an ELBA
member of staff
- Interview on-site with the
employer.
Employability training is non-accredited and
will follow ELBA's existing and award-winning Real Apprentice
model. Sessions include:
- Communication - Interview preparation -
confidence building - industry knowledge - numeracy and literacy
skills testing - employer/candidate speed networking event -
money
- Management - RA Site Tours
- Site participation will be a fundamental
aspect of delivery, to date, provisional confirmations have been
received from the following RA sites: Thompson Reuters - Morgan
Stanley - Bank of America - RBS - USB

Teaching assistant programme
The teaching assistant course runs over 16 weeks and includes a
full range of theory based learning and practical work experience
within the classroom. All participants must have a good level
of numeracy and literacy, and as such the eligibility criteria for
selection is GCSE Maths and English at grades A-C or Numeracy and
Literacy at Level 2.
During the course participants are assisted
with the production of a professional CV and given guidance on how
to approach application forms and interviews. On completion of
the course participants will gain a nationally recognised NVQ
qualification at Level 2.
The courses now runs three times a year in
January, May and September with a typical intake of between 25-30
individuals. The classroom based teaching takes place a
the Professional Development centre in Mile End, and work
placements in schools throughout Tower Hamlets.
The next intake will be in the New
Year and Information open days will be early 2012.

SIA security course
Location: Billingsgate market,
London.
The seven-day training is run by Learn
Assist which consists of;
- Level 2 Door Supervision (five days)
- Appointed Person First Aid (one day)
- CSCS (one day)
- Once clients have passed the course we pay
and process their SIA Door Supervisor Licence and then work with
them to help them secure employment.
In order to secure a place on the course
clients must have;
- Passport or Driving Licence or original Birth
Certificate registered within one year of their birth
- Five year checkable history
- Over 18 years old
- Certain cautions or convictions will stop
clients obtaining an SIA licence and therefore will make them
ineligible for the course.
Application process:
- Telephone screening
- Application session where clients will be
required to complete forms and provide ID documents
- Interview
- Induction which will include literacy and
numeracy and a communications test

BBC work placements
Location: White City, London.
As part of its activities around the London
2012 Games, the BBC has developed a work placement programme
specifically for residents of the six host boroughs. They run
ongoing schools work experience schemes, and graduate schemes, so
are looking to engage with other people who would not usually have
the opportunity to take a placement. The placements are varied
and total around 30 a quarter across the six host boroughs. Areas
of placements include:
- BBC Newsrooms
- BBC London
- BBC College of Production
- BBC Sports Archive
- The Big Splash
- Match of the Day Kickabout
The placements are mostly admin based, but
there is the opportunity to shadow production staff as they
assemble news items and programme content. To be eligible
applicants should be 18+, be a non-graduate, and be resident in
Tower Hamlets. They should be able to demonstrate a passion for the
media, and ideally have some experience of blogging, website
development, acting, media studies, or other activities connected
to the media. Placements are voluntary and last
between one-four weeks. Skillsmatch pays travel
throughout the placement.
