Boarding animals
Anyone who carries on the business of providing accommodation
for other people's cats and dogs is required to have a licence. The
aim of the licensing requirements is to achieve certain standards
in the management of the accommodation and to ensure precautions
against disease and fire.
The keeping and running of animal
establishments (catteries and kennels) is controlled by the Animal
Boarding Establishments Act 1963. No person may keep a boarding
establishment for animals without first obtaining a licence from
their local authority.
A copy of the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963 can be
obtained from the Office of Public Sector Information, or a copy
can be inspected at the council offices where you may also obtain
details of the fee, an application form and further help or
advice.
You can also download a
copy of the application form (pdf 544k) or
apply online through the Businesslink website.
You will be contacted in writing on receipt of the application
form and a site visit arranged.
