Local Food
Local food growing is a vital contributor to
sustainability and more important than ever in the context of
climate change and reliance on food imports that that use up our
finite supplies of petroleum.
Growing local food has numerous benefits
including; educational value for children and adults, appreciation
of how food is produced, encouraging a healthy diet, improved
access to healthy, cheap food, physical and health benefits and
empowerment of communities.
Early in 2008 a group of organisations,
individuals and the council came together to form the Tower Hamlets
Food Link to encourage and promote more local food growing.
The aims of the Tower Hamlets Food Link are
primarily to provide publicity, information exchange and training
for anyone interested in local food growing. The Food Link
submitted a successful first stage application to the Lottery Local
Food Fund and has since been invited to submit a full application
which it is in the process of finalising.
