Bin removal and timed collections - information for
businesses
On January 31 2011, a new waste collection service was
introduced in the Brick Lane area, one of the most vibrant and
heavy footfall areas located in Tower Hamlets. The area is densely
populated with many restaurants, shops and late night venues and
historically has suffered from incidents of fly-tipping and
illegally disposed waste.
The new service involved the removal of all
waste container bins used by businesses and residents located on
the public highway (for waste and recycling disposal) and replaced
with a sack collection at specified times of the day. These
service arrangements were designed to improve the local street
scene and reduce the amount of time waste/recycling were authorised
for disposal.
Improvements to the local street scene were
noticed immediately and the decision was made to introduce this
scheme to other key streets/roads throughout the borough.
The introduction of the new service
arrangements is a sustained clean-up campaign which has generated a
key number of benefits:
- Increased and more efficient waste collections throughout the
day
- Improved urban environment and street scene with a reduction in
litter and fly-tipping
- Improved attractiveness and ambience in the local area with the
removal of the bins
- Economic savings for businesses and residents due to reduction
in fly-tipping and illegal waste
- Economic benefits for local businesses with more visitors
coming into the local area
- An improved place for residents, businesses and visitors to
live, work and enjoy!
