Modern washable nappies come in great-looking, easy-to-use
designs and by using them you can save up to £500 per child.
Disposable nappies are mostly made of plastics with a chemical
centre. With real nappies, you can ensure you are putting natural
fabrics next to your baby’s skin.
Free real nappy vouchers
Tower Hamlets is part of a London-wide Real Nappies for London
scheme which provides residents with an opportunity to try real
nappies. This scheme allows residents who are expecting a
baby or have a child under the age of 18 months to apply for an
information pack and a free £40 voucher. The voucher can be
spent on washable nappies at participating retailers or to cover
half the cost of a 12 week trial with a local laundry service
(Number One for Nappies).
Nappuccino events
Nappuccino is an event run by us in co-operation with Washable
Nappy Company where we give free independent advice on choosing and
using washable nappies. It is a great opportunity to meet
other people who are using real nappies and find out more
about them in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Nappuccino is attended by someone from the
council who will be able to issue a free £40 real nappy
voucher to anyone who has registered for this event and has brought
the correct
documentation. You can spend your voucher and/or buy
washable nappies on the day if you wish to do
so.

Five reasons to use real nappies
- Savings from real nappies for the first child alone can amount
up to £500 and Real Nappies can be used again and again and will
last for more than one child – saving even more money.
- Modern, washable nappies are made from soft, natural materials
such as cotton, hemp, wool and bamboo fibres. They use Velcro and
poppers so are quick and easy to fit.
- They are easy to wash. A 60ºC home wash is hot enough to
sanitise nappies or nappy laundering services are available – they
deliver stacks of clinically laundered nappies to your door and
whisk away the dirty ones.
- Real Nappies are better for the environment as they reduce
landfill which impacts on global warming. According to the
Women’s Environmental Network, 3 billion nappies are thrown away in
the UK every year, 8 million every day with about 90% ending up in
the landfill site. In Tower Hamlets, disposable nappies cost around
£250,000 to dispose of.
- It could take hundreds of years for plastics in disposable
nappies to decompose which means that nappies you throw away could
still be around when your great, great, great grandchildren are
born.
